WHAT IS ROSACEA?

Have you been searching for a name for the facial flushing or red bumps that seem to come back again and again? You're not alone. Rosacea (ro-ZA-she-uh) is a fairly common condition that affects nearly 14 million Americans, yet it is still somewhat unknown and poorly understood.

Often characterized by flare-ups and remissions, rosacea is a chronic, inflammatory skin condition that causes persistent facial redness, blemishes, and bumps. Although rosacea can affect anyone, people over age 30 with fair skin and a family history are most at risk.

Signs and Symptoms of Rosacea
Signs of rosacea can vary greatly from person to person. Sufferers commonly report experiencing

  • A tendency to blush or flush easily.
  • A burning or stinging sensation.
  • Small visible blood vessels, bumps and pus-filled pimples.
  • Dry, tight or itchy facial skin that may swell or thicken.
  • Burning, itching, watery eyes or swollen eyelids.
Prompt Treatment is Important
The early signs of rosacea can be mistakenly attributed to acne, eczema or an allergy which often causes a delay in treatment. If left untreated, rosacea may progress in severity, resulting in permanent changes to your skin. Recognizing the signs and symptoms and talking to a dermatologist about the appropriate treatment is the best first step you can take. Don't have a dermatologist?
